Q21 Identify the Conclusion
The first thing that you will be asked to do in Section B is identify the conclusion of the passage. For this question, you are looking for a specific sentence or part of a sentence that sums up the overall point of the document; what is its author trying to get you to accept?
Your answer to this question must be a direct and accurate quotation from the text. If you paraphrase the conclusion, you risk distorting its meaning, and even a slight distortion will mean that you miss out on this mark.
The conclusion will usually be located towards the beginning of the passage, though it may also appear at the end; rarely is it in the middle. Remember to look for indicator words such as “therefore” or “thus”. In past papers, conclusions have often been about how we should respond to a specific issue, so keeping an eye out for “should” and its synonyms may also be helpful here.
